It's hot out here!  I don't know about everyone else, but painting is more exhausting in the heat.  All I want to do is nap. I did have a very clumsy introduction to watercolors this week, but I survived.  It's going to take years before I have any idea how to manipulate this medium where I want it to go.  For the time being I am going to stick to oils.  I congratulate all the watercolor artists out there - you have my deepest respect.  You have taken a difficult medium and made it seem so easy.  Only a real master can do that. I encourage all my Red Easel readers to try a new medium.  If nothing else, it will make you appreciate the art of others who have mastered it.  Meet Cara Bevan, our Featured Artist.  This young lady is all of 20 years old, lives on a big farm in North Carolina, and has an amazing talent.  She is truly remarkable.  We found her thru the Artist's Network Newsletter that did a story on her and we are proud that she is now a part of Red Easel!  You will be inspired. This painting is from Deborah Eve Alastra - "Toby's Fish" 22x33 Watercolor.  You can view more of Deborah's remarkable watercolor work by going to her Red Easel Gallery Susan Vaughn Editor-in-Chief Red Easel      **************************************** Watercolor Workout For the last week, while laid up with an injured knee, I had this overwhelming desire to try my hand at watercolor painting.  Never having worked with the medium except when I was in kindergarten, I was excited to play with them again.  So, I went out and purchased the basic colors and some 140 lb watercolor paper and a few books on painting in watercolors.  I am not cut out for this.  I don't know how you watercolor artists do it, but I haven't got a clue how you manage to direct the water and the colors to go where you want them and actually come out with a great painting.  Mine are trash.  Either I need to watch more videos on painting in watercolor or find myself a mentor close by.  Until then, I will stick with my trusty and messy oil paints.  At least if I screw up I can scrape it off and start over.  With watercolor - or at least my experience with it in the last 48 hours - is that if you screw up your screwed.  Susan **************************************** Hit or Miss By Tony Bianco Professional Visual Artist Medium: Oil Orillia, Ontario Canada Tony Bianco Fine Art Bianco Red Easel Gallery Cape Breton Highlands National Park had been in my mind for weeks before our arrival.  The rugged coast and mountainous terrain beckoned me to paint them.  Our arrival on a sunny afternoon had me sure that this place would be all that I hoped it would be.  We set up our camp and explored a bit, and then retired for the evening. In time we usually distance ourselves (or outgrow) these early influences.  we find new inspiration and discover other ways to work.  We explore and experiment, and eventually, if we're lucky or work hard (or both), we develop a way to think and paint that is identifiably our own.
