"Out of the Mists of Time"
380mm x 610mm
Acrylic on Canvas

This painting is from my Alaska journeys. The location is Surprise Glacier in Harriman Fjord, deep in the pristine wilderness of Prince William Sound, Alaska. The landscape, seascape, marine life and wildlife in this area are utterly amazing and a journey here is a lifetime of memories, an experience never to be forgotten.
I took the photo references for this work from in a Kayak within about half a mile from the glacier. The small ship 'Discovery' is the one I was traveling on and is a 65 footer taking only 12 passengers and four crew. http://www.discoveryvoyages.com
The photo of the boat was taken from different place, and I checked carefully with Dean the owner of Discovery and also Hugh Rose my friend and photographer who is also a guide on these tours, to make sure I had the comparative sizes of the glacier and the boat, so that the scale would be authentic.
Here Discovery is about 2 or 3 miles out from the glacier. It gives the painting a great sense of scale. I liked the dramatic mood of the dark mountain - Mt Muir - with the hanging glaciers appearing out of the mists, hence the name of the painting, most suited to the whole area.
In the actual painting the glacier is the rich teal/blue of deep compacted ice and the tiny boat captures the eye and leads you on upward to the glacier, the mountain and into the mists of time, where your eye comes softly down again via the waterfalls.
I hope you enjoy viewing this work and my story about it as much as I enjoyed painting it, something I wanted to do since the moment in the kayak when I took the photos.
