The Artist's Magazine is a premier art magazine around the world. They have an annual contest that always attracts attention. Last year I had two artworks become finalists - this year, I had another finalist and one reach honorable mention! My painting "Writer's Block" (pictured below) won and a picture of it, with artist's commentary, was published in the December issue of the magazine (on store shelves Nov. 1st). This is only my second year entering the contest and I am ecstatic to be featured. As for my art progress, I'm still sculpting and easing my way back into painting. I've created some smaller artworks which I'll compile into a post later. I'd like to show you what kind of sculpting I've been up to.
My grandmother has grown gourds for many years, and her creative streak has built my own. These creations are gourd turtles. As you can see below, I start with a "caveman" gourd (chosen for it's lumpy shape) and alter it by cutting and sculpting onto it. Each turtle I make is unique and is specific to a certain breed. Someday I want to have a second website to display all my turtles and other unique sculptures, but for now my only gallery of them is here: http://art-fromthe-heart.deviantart.com/gallery/#Sculpture Some of my unique and for sale turtle gourds are below.
